What to Wear for Your Photoshoot: A Style Guide and Inspiration

One of the key aspects of creating timeless, beautiful images is selecting the right outfit. When planning your family, maternity, or newborn photoshoot, what you wear plays a big role in the overall feel of the photos. As your photographer, I want to make sure that you feel confident and comfortable while ensuring the focus stays on you and your loved ones. Below are some style tips to help you choose the perfect look for your upcoming session.

Opt for Neutral and Soft Tones

Neutral tones like whites, creams, soft grays, and earth tones work beautifully because they complement all skin tones and ensure the focus remains on you and your family. Soft colors also lend a natural and classic feel to the photos, creating a timeless look that won’t go out of style. Avoid overly bold patterns or colors, as they can detract from the overall aesthetic and clash with your environment, whether you’re shooting indoors, outdoors, or in the studio.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

It’s important to coordinate outfits without being too “matchy.” Think about how the colors and textures will complement each other rather than having everyone in the same outfit. For instance, if someone is wearing a patterned dress, the others can wear solid colors that pick up on one of the tones in that pattern. Layers, like scarves or cardigans, also help create depth and visual interest in photos, especially for outdoor shoots.

Comfort is Key

While style is important, so is comfort. If you or your family members feel uncomfortable or restricted in your clothing, it will reflect in the photos. Choose clothes that make you feel good and confident. For maternity shoots, opt for flowing dresses or outfits that flatter your bump, while for newborn sessions, simple and soft fabrics are ideal for both you and your baby. The more comfortable and at ease you are, the more natural and relaxed the photos will be.
